TRENDSETTER: Current's Erin Bruehl Discusses the Intersection between Trust and Relevance

The Internationalist Trendsetters is written by Deborah Malone, founder of The Internationalist.

Erin Bruehl is Director of Communications at Current, a leading U.S. challenger bank created to serve Americans overlooked by traditional banking institutions.  With a mission to improve financial outcomes, Current believes that banking should be accessible and affordable for everyone, especially people with a variety of modern lifestyles—from those young and starting out to people who are part of today's growing Gig Economy.

As she leads communications, PR, content and messaging across all platforms, Erin has come to recognize the importance of establishing trust and relevance with Current customers, as well understanding why it is critical to grow one's company and build one's brand.

In our conversation, we discuss the following:

  • What are the origins of Current?  Is it a purpose-led brand?
  • Is growing your company related to building your brand?  Or are these goals mutually exclusive?
  • Why are trust and relevancy so important now?
  • As a new brand, how do you balance driving brand awareness, while also focusing on performance metrics?
  • Can marketing strive for greater personalization without jeopardizing customer privacy—particularly in banking?
  • Do today's consumers have new expectations of brands?

Erin Bruehl has an extensive background in both digital marketing and journalism.  Prior to her role at Current, she led brand promotions and social media at online travel services company, Priceline, for several years after spending over eight years at the United States Tennis Association/US Open Tennis Championships as head of social media and as the organization's senior writer. She earned her Master of Arts degree from New York University in Journalism, her Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Cross and spent several years as a sportswriter for various newspapers in New York.

She was named one of The Internationalist's NEXT 50 marketers in 2019.
